When a media text is being planned, the most important question the producers consider is "Does it have an audience?". If the answer to this is a "no", then there is no point in going any further. If no one is going to watch/read/play/buy the text, the producers aren't going to make any money or get their message across.
Film Audience
| These are the different film certificate categories |
Thrillers have quite a wide audience, however many films classed as thrillers, in my opinion are not thriller at all. Thriller movies are aimed between the age range of 16-25 years and 30-50.
The gender of the target audience isn't as specific as age ranges or demographic classification, but is important nonetheless.
However many different sub genre's appeal to different audiences. For example action thrillers appeal more to men and young people, and crime thrillers appeal to older people. The main appeal of thrillers is the suspense and trying to guess ahead. Movies like Inception, or Shutter Island with Leonardo DiCaprio or the Bourne films with Matt Damon are always going to be a box office hit with a huge target audience because of the A-list actors. These type of movies are targeted to young adults and adults who prefer to do less thinking in some sense, and they like to sit back and see action taking place and enjoy the feeling of adrenaline building up as the suspense takes place.
In my opinion most thriller films are aimed at men, for example in a lot of thriller films there are male characters, and them being the main characters. So male audiences can relate to what’s going on and relate to things that happen to them. Whereas some women may not understand their point of view.
