Sub-Genre

What is Sub- Genre?
A sub genre is like subdivisions of an encompassing term. For example, if you saw a movie labelled drama, could you watch it and see if it was a romantic drama?
Its taking groups like comedies, mysteries, poems, and making the thinking narrower.

A thriller genre can have sub genre which gives more detail on how a thriller should be laid out. These are the sub genres in relation to thriller:

  • Action Thriller
  • Conspiracy Thriller
  • Crime Thriller
  • Disaster Thriller
  • Eco-Thriller
  • Forensic Thriller
  • Legal Thriller
  • Medical Thriller
  • Mystery Thriller
  • Political Thriller
  • Psychological Thriller
  • Religious Thriller
  • Romantic Thriller
  • Spy Thriller
  • Supernatural Thriller
  • Techno Thriller
The sub-genres mentioned above, each has their own target audeince. For example, an action thriller movie would only interest people who have desires for action movies with thriller attached to it. So different target audience are for different thriller sub-genres.

Casino Royale - Action/Thriller

This is the opening credit to the movie Casino Royale. Its an action thriller movie.

The opening shows many people are getting killed by James Bond. This is a convention of an action-thriller because its scene itself semms to be fast paced. At the beginning of this clip a dark figure appears, this gives a sense of the unknown, as you cannot see his face just his silhouette. We don't know what he looks like until the end of the clip, but during this period this creates a sense of suspense.

Thriller: An Amazin' 2 Minute Film

This film is 2 minutes long but nevertheless amazing! My only criticism is that they could've used a bit more of a convincing blood other than that I like this, especially because it has no dialogue.

Sci-fi Thriller - Plurality

This short 15 minute film is absolutley amazing, from the camera-work, effects, colour-correction to the acting. This is a must watch film - makes you wonder, can this really reflect out future to be?

Short Films - Sight Systems

This film was almost too silent and seemed boring, until you watch it all, it is amazing! I really like the effects used, how everything is a game, his scoring system and the fact he is challenging himself. A very interesting story and twist towards the end. Not to mention I enjoyed the colour correction used in the film, not too less and not too much of that blue - gives it a nice look.

Short Films - Cinematography

A short film about how two 'couples' met. What I like about this are the camera shots used, a slight disappointment on the sound in the middle of the film but that was excused due to the brilliant camera-work, editing and storyline.

Genre

What is Genre?

Genre is a type of movie that the audience tend to watch.

Why Is Genre Useful?

Genre is useful in three ways. At first it is brilliant for producers - they know the key elements and the main ingredients for their movie to be successful. Secondly, it is useful to the audience due to the fact that they know what type of film they are going to see. Lastly, genre is basis of advertising.

Analysing a poster

The poster below, we can see the genre of this movie is action. How do we know this? The image of the actor gives it away. We can see John Mc Clane, the main actor, holding a gun next to his face, as if he is hiding away from the enemies. The close up shot of him looking at the audience gives the feeling that it is an action movie and also he looks rough as he is wearing a dirty vest and it looks as if he is sweating. The background image of the skyscraper and the red devilish colour makes John Mc Clane stands out from the background, this shows the seriousness of the movie.

Genre

Genre  - Sub Genre - Audience

What is Genre?
- Genre defines the type of movie you are going to watch.

Why is Genre useful?
- Genre helps producers create a certain of movie that is aimed at certain audiences.
- Genre helps the audience to figure out what kind of movie they are going to watch and how they may experience it.
- Genre helps create certain types of advertisements.

Analysis Poster

From this poster we can tell the genre will be horror. This is because the face on the centre of the poster has screaming mouths as eyes which creates a disturbing image; the mouths could represent victims in this movie. Another feature that makes it obvious that the genre will be horror is the fact that the background is complete black and face is coming out the darkness.

Exploring Genre

What is Genre?

A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.

Synonyms
style - type - kind - sort - manner - genus

Why is Genre Useful

Genre comes in handy in many ways, without genre how else are going to describe the type and style of the film in one word? Say for example a director wanted to create a film, he'll first think of an idea, from that idea he'll define the genre and then build from there.

It'll then be easier for producers to pick out actors for the film, define storyboards and organise things for the film.

It'll then also appeal to the audience which it is aimed at because they know what to expect from the genre.

Genre is the style of the film but it doesn't mean it gives away the story.

Analysing a poster

If we look at the poster below, what genre will you think it is? Comedy, of course, if you thought otherwise - you were dropped on your head as a baby.

What gives away that the poster below is the genre of comedy?
First of all we have a man and a teddy urinating  together and looking up. There are no dark areas, everything looks bright and lit up, the fact it's out in the summer is a great time for comedy, it's from the creators of family guy - producers of humorous cartoon shows.

The fact that the teddy bear can urinate is sort of questioning and the fact that the man is with a teddy also holds questions, must be funny.

Collateral Diary Blog

Collateral Diary Blog

We have shot our version of Collateral outside of Angel Station using a JVC Camera and a tripod. We have chose that place as our location due to the fact that there many people coming in and out of the station and we needed people to be in our movie.

We had a crew members of 3: Hussain, Razwan and Zack. Hussain played the role of Jason Statham, Zack played the role of the Hitman, originally played by Tom Cruise and Razwan was responsible for shooting the movie and taking still images.. The shoot consisted of over the shoulder, long shot, and mid shot.
The weather was only the setback as it was cold and our body were freezing to do the shoot. However, we still managed to get everything done.

The Walking Dead - Opening Sequence Analysis

The convention of a title opening, tells the audience many things. For example, the Tv show The Walking Dead:

  • Carries a title sequence. It introduces the key characters with the first three characters having an image shown respectively. The images are close up shots of their faces, which indicates that they are given the main roles.
  • During the title sequence, the locations/settings are introduced which is a remote town where zombies are taking over, and the town is in a chaos with survival being the only option.
  • The opening of the show sets the mood and tone.
  • The eerie  music played during the title sequence  catches the audience eyes and makes them want to watch the show.
  • The lonely places in the town and places that are shown foreshadows the things that are going to happen in the show.
  • The special effects and the camera work gives this eerie feeling to the audience. For example, the colour and brightness of this sequence is dull and sepia.

Collateral (2004) Storyboard Remake

Shot by Shot Remake of Collateral (2004) - Script Writing

We, as a group, have decided to choose Collateral as our "shot by shot remake". Our task is to remake that particular scene so that we have a better understanding of how a movie can be shot.

Actors:

  • Zak as Tom Cruise
  • Hussain as Jason Statham
Camera man:

  • Razwan
We hope to get people passing by the actors some how. The outsiders will be on the camera as well as Hussain and Zak, but they should be blurred therefore focusing on the actors.

Script:
*After Tom Cruise budges into Jason Statham*

Tom: "You okay?"
Jason: "Yeah im fine mate. Dont worry about it"
Tom: "You alright"
Jason: "Enjoy LA"

Location: Inside college
Props: Shades, Bag, Some kind of papers
