Convention of film opening - Red Lights

The convention of a film opening, tells the audience many things. For example, the movie Red Lights:

  • Carries a title sequence. It introduces the key characters and the people behind the making of the movie.
  • After the title sequence, the location/settings is introduced which is in the airport runway, in this case, with the plane landing.
  • The opening of the movie sets the mood and tone.
  • During the title sequence, the scene changes with a hard beat in the music.
  • The film opening normally leaves unanswered questions - "enigma". This leaves the audience in suspense and they crave to watch it more.

What are the conventions of film openings?

The convention of a film opening, usually tells the audience what genre the film is at the very beginning, this can be portrayed by using sounds or the cinematic choice.

So the opening should also be able to set the mood and tone of the film at the very beginning if you want.

A Classic Opening

Psycho - "Classic Opening"

What does this have?
This has an amazingly long title sequence, using text and shapes to introduce star names and other credits to the main people who went through the production of the film.

After the title opening a shot a the cityscape is used, it is then focused on one building, it goes through the window to the characters inside the room and the film begins - usually with the two characters chatting.
